JWST/HEBR 4203, Israeli Literature: Exile, Nation, Home - Fall 2013 Core Course

In this course we examine Israeli literature from its beginnings to the present day. We read texts written by Israeli Jewish and Arab writers and explore how ideas of exile, nation and home play into the Israeli experience. Recommended prereqs.: Any 1000 and 2000 level literature courses, Hebrew/Jewish Studies courses, or with Instructor’s permission. Taught in English. Approved for arts & sciences core curriculum: literature and the arts.

Fall 2013 Core Course: RUSS 2221-010, Introduction to Modern Russian Culture

This course introduces students to the major trends in Russian culture from the 1890s to the present. In addition to learning about the history of this turbulent period (WWI, revolutions, the great terror, the GULag, WWII, the Cold War, perestroika, the collapse, post-Soviet Russia), we will study the literature, art and cinema of this time. Taught in English. Approved for arts & sciences core curriculum: historical context.

CU Honors Journal launch forum

Come celebrate the launch of the 2013 edition of the University of Colorado Boulder Honors Journal presented by the Cultural Events Board and Honors Journal. An Evening with Sir Salman Rushdie

The Distinguished Speakers Board is proud to announce Sir Salman Rushdie will speak on campus Wednesday, April 17, in Macky Auditorium. Doors for the event open at 6:30 p.m., with the lecture beginning at 7:30 p.m. Student tickets are available for $2 at the DSB table on the 1st floor of the UMC. Community tickets are available for $15 through Macky's website. Rushdie is the world-renowned and award winning author of the novels including Midnight's Children and The Satanic Verses, among many others.

Swedish Language Course, Fall 2013

SWED 1110-001. Beginning Swedish 1 DILS. Course provides practical, communicative language skills for use in a variety of situations. Examines basic language structure and grammatical forms. Introduces students to Swedish history and contemporary culture and society. This course uses the Directed Independent Language Study (or DILS) model, where students study independently and meet regularly with a native speaker and language coach to do exercises, learn new material, and take exams. Course meets 1-1:50 p.m. MWF.

RUSS 2231-010, Fairy Tales of Russia: Fall 2013 Core Course

This course introduces students to the rich tradition of Russian folk belief, mythology and fairy tales. Students will examine, on the one hand, how Russian folk belief and fairy tales reflect cultural, social and political values. On the other hand, students will analyze how Russian and Soviet artists, writers and politicians have utilized folk belief and fairy tales in service of their own ideologies and programs. Taught in English. Approved for arts and sciences core curriculum: literature and the arts.

Join us in completing this team endeavor that will take place on Tuesday, April 9 in the ground-floor lobby of Eaton Humanities.
