LASP Public Lecture May 1—The Sun, Climate, and a New Solar Mission

Dr. Greg Kopp will discuss what we know about the Sun and its influences on Earth’s climate, and describe current measurements of the solar climate data record on Wednesday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the main LASP building (LSTB) at 1234 Innovation Drive on the East Campus Research Park. The Sun provides nearly all energy for Earth’s climate system and even small changes in its energy output can have large effects on climate, since the Sun's energy is so much greater than all other climate energy sources combined.

Maymester core course: RUSS 4811 Introduction to 19th-Century Russian Literature

The great writers of 19th-century Russia made an enormous contribution to world literature, and have influenced modern thought, writing and film. In this survey course students will be introduced to such writers as Pushkin, Turgenev, Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, and the major literary movements and social debates of the 19th century their works reflect. Course taught in English. Core: Literature and the Arts.

Maymester Core Course: HEBR 2350/ JWST 2350. Introduction to Jewish Culture

Come and explore the development of Jewish culture as it moves across the chronological and geographical map of the historic Jewish people with an emphasis on the variety of Jewish ethnicities and their cultural productions. Taught in English. Approved for Arts & Sciences Core Curriculum: Human Diversity. This is also one of the required introductory courses for the Jewish Studies major and minor.

Public Forum on the Future of Asian Studies

Friday, April 26 @ 4 p.m., Humanities 250 A roundtable discussion addressing the future of Asian area studies from a variety of perspectives (K-12 education, publishing, higher education, etc.). Panelists: Frank Conlon, professor emeritus of history, South Asian Studies and Comparative Religion at the University of Washington; Susan McEachern, editorial director of Rowman & Littlefield; and Lynn Parisi, director of the Program for Teaching East Asia. Moderator: Tim Oakes, director of the Center for Asian Studies.

Italian theatre performance

The Italian theatre class invites you to its annual performance in Italian "Le donne, i cavallier, l'arme, gli amon" freely adapted from Orlando Furioso by L. Ariosto. Everybody is invited. Come joint the fun, it's free. Refreshments after the show. Old Main Chapel, Saturday, April 27 at 7 p.m., Sunday, April 28 at 4 p.m.

Peru Service Trip

Join a group of CU students traveling to Peru to help the poor and experience the culture. From May 15-31 we will be working down in Peru. Half the trip consists of environmental and solidarity work in the shanty town of Pamplona. The other half will be traveling to Cuzco where we will explore many Incan ruins (including Machu Picchu!) and have tons of fun. Experience a trip like no other, where you are able to help the poorest of the poor, while gaining a new persepective of the world, creating personal growth.
