Summer workshops for K-5 at the CU Museum

This year’s theme is “Leaving Your Mark” in conjunction with our new exhibit, “Steps in Stone, Walking Through Time.” Come and learn how ancient animals from the very large to the very small left evidence of their lives. Our archaeology days will show your kids how humans have left their mark, and what we can learn about ancient cultures from the artifacts we find. From dinosaurs and insects to deep sea creatures, our topics are sure to engage your child and make an impression. Workshops are every Friday, 9 a.m. to noon, $25.

Sacred Balance: Mixing Ancient Hopi Culture with a Modern Mystery Series

The Friends of the CU Libraries will host mystery writer Shannon Baker on Friday, June 5, at 7 p.m. in the Wolf Law School Building on the CU-Boulder Campus. An opening reception begins at 6:30 p.m. Baker will share how she incorporates Hopi history, culture and beliefs into her Nora Abbott book series - a fast-paced mix of murder, environmental issues and Hopi Indians. The newest book in this series, Tattered Legacy, is set in the red rocks of Moab, UT.

Make tracks to the CU Museum for summer workshops for children

Each workshop meets for three hours from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday mornings at the CU Museum of Natural History on the CU-Boulder Campus. Healthy snacks will be provided. This year’s theme is “Leaving Your Mark” in conjunction with our new exhibit, Steps in Stone, Walking Through Time. Our topics are sure to engage your children and make an impression on their summer. Lecture by visiting artist and poet Vanessa Place

The White Devil and the Black Demon: On Kenneth Goldsmith’s The Body of Michael Brown McKenna 112, Thursday, May 28, 5 p.m. Vanessa Place is an artist, art critic, publisher, and author of seven fiction and nonfiction books. She is the CEO of VanessaPlace Inc, the world’s first poetry corporation. In summer 2015, Place is teaching a course at the University of Colorado Boulder as part of the FIRST (Faculty in Residence Summer Term) Program. Sponsored by the FIRST Program at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Learn a language: Non-credit classes at ALTEC

The Anderson Language Technology Center (ALTEC) is pleased to announce that registration is now open for summer language classes. These classes are non-credit and are open to the CU staff, faculty, graduate students, retirees and their spouses. Classes begin June 15 and meet three hrs/week for five weeks. Tuition is only $75. This summer choose from various levels of French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish.

Presenting the winners of the 16th Annual Thompson Awards for Western American Writing

The Center of the American West hosted the 16th annual Thompson Awards banquet on May 1. Contest winners were honored with certificates and cash prizes, and the first place winners in each category gave short readings of their work. The keynote speaker for this year's banquet was John Vernon, author of 11 novels, including the New York Times notable book, "Lucky Billy." Visit the website to read the winning entries, as well as John Vernon's "10 Commandments for Writers." Information on next year's contest will be posted in the fall.
