Celebrate Diwali Nov. 8

Join the Indian Student Association (ISA) in celebrating Diwali - The Festival of Lights. Diwali has been celebrated in a grandiose manner and this year it is going to be bigger, better and louder. There are some captivating cultural performance that will include Bharatanatyam and Bhangra, along with exhilarating Bollywood dances and soulful Indian music. Subjects needed for passive cycling study: $160

The Applied Exercise Science Lab is seeking sedentary male subjects aged 18-55 to study passive cycling (involves a stationary bicycle with a motor rotating the bicycle pedals for you). The experiment will consist of four separate sessions each lasting four hours. Benefits of participating include: body composition (% body fat), fitness assessment, bone density, glucose tolerance assessment, and determination of caloric expenditure. Exploring diversity through film series

Join the Cultural Unity and Engagement Center as we explore diversity through film and discussion, 12-2 p.m., C4C N320, chips and salsa. Informal and safe dialogues. Nov. 4: In the White Man’s Image - Cultural genocide in disguise in 1875; the plan was to have Native Americans become imitation white men. Nov. 11: Urban Rez – Explores the legacy of modern-day effects of the U.S. govt.’s assimilation policy to relocate Native Americans from rural homelands to urban areas. Denver is highlighted. Italian Language Week

The French and Italian department invites you to join in the celebration of the Italian Language and Culture week. Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 3 - 4, 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. in HUMN living area: Exhibit on the Dolomites. Tuesday, Nov. 4, 7:30 p.m. in HUMN 150: Presentations on the Dolomites. There will be door prizes and refreshments will follow. Thursday, Nov. 6, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. in HUMN living area: Italian dessert competition. Stop by to vote for the best and the yummiest dessert.

Contemporary Jewish Societies (Spring 2015 course)

IAFS/JWST/GSLL 3600 - Tu 3:30-6 PM Uses a transnational lens to explore contemporary debates about Jewish people, places and practices of identity and community; places that Jews have called "home," and what has made, or continues to make those places "Jewish"; issues of Jewish homelands and diasporas; gender, sexuality, food and the Jewish body; religious practices in contemporary contexts. Readings drawn primarily from contemporary journalism and scholarship. Satisfies core requirement: human diversity Limited to 18 students

Introduction to Jewish Culture (Spring 2015 course)

JWST/GSLL 2350 -- Tu/Th 11 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Explores the development and expressions of Jewish cultures across the chronological and geographical map of the Jewish people, with an emphasis on the variety of Jewish ethnicities and their cultural productions and changes, including such issues as sexuality and foodways. Sets the discussion in relevant contexts, and looks at cultural representations that include literary, religious, and visual texts. Satisfies Core requirement: Human Diversity

Stories from inside the LGBT sports movement

Kate Fagan, a former CU Buffs basketball player, will discuss the challenges of being a gay athlete and coming out to teammates. Going beyond sports, she will discuss the changing perceptions about homosexuality in society over the past decades to present day. Smashing Insights: Bruce Lee on equity and inclusion in a globalizing world

What can Bruce Lee teach us about equality, justice and inclusion in a globalizing world? Studying Bruce Lee’s journey reveals how one remarkable individual crossed barriers, challenged racism and drew upon multiple cultural heritages to become one of the world’s most enduring icons. Carlotta Walls LaNier: Civil Rights Then and Now

In 1957, at age 14, Carlotta Walls LaNier was the youngest “Little Rock Nine” member to integrate Central High School. Mrs. LaNier speaks about the early days of race barriers being broken in the U.S. and continues the dialogue to present day race and diversity issues. 2014 Diversity and Inclusion Summit, Nov. 11-12

Building the Road Map: Educate, Inspire, Empower and Transform 2014 marks the 50th commemoration of the landmark 1964 Civil Rights Act. This act, along with the 1965 Voting Rights Act and the Fair Housing Act in 1968, helped establish the legal foundation for equality for all Americans. To honor this monumental legal shift in America, the Diversity and Inclusion Summit on Nov. 11-12 continues “Building the Road Map” that we hope will lead to achieving equality for all.
