ENGL 4018 explores Israeli-Palestinian culture clash

ENGL 4018-001: Israel/Palestine in Global Culture examines the global circulation of discourses, images, and narratives about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Exploring a range of contemporary fiction, poetry, film, television, art, and other media, we seek to uncover the political ideologies inherent to cultural production, and discuss in detail how culture both exacerbates conflict and might help in resolving it. Property Services’ live auction of surplus property and equipment Aug. 29

University of Colorado Boulder Property Services will hold a public auction of surplus property and equipment on Saturday, Aug. 29. Items will be available for preview beginning at 8 a.m. and the auction will begin at 9 a.m. Auctions are held on the east side of: University of Colorado Boulder Distribution Center 3300 Walnut Street Boulder, CO 80301

Participants needed for electrically assisted bicycle study

The Applied Exercise Science Lab is seeking sedentary subjects aged 18-55 to study electrically assisted bicycling (bicycle with a motor that only provides assistance when you pedal) and its potential effects on overall health. The experiment will consist of five separate sessions (up to 2.5 hrs. long) over 7 weeks. Benefits of participating include: body composition (% body fat), fitness assessment, bone density, glucose tolerance assessment and blood lipid profile. As compensation, you will be entered into a raffle to win an electric bike.

Talk highlights how 1920s queer black writers caused stir in American consciousness

Join English FIRST scholar Gary Holcomb for “A Jolt of Consciousness: Writings of the Queer Black Renaissance” from 5 to 6 pm, Thursday, July 30 in the Mabel Van Duzee Room (Norlin 424B). “The work coming out of the 1920s Harlem Renaissance was spirited, compelling, vitalizing, profound, confrontational, and brave all at the same time,” says Holcomb, whose talk will focus on how the Harlem Renaissance opened the door for a vital queer Black literary awakening. http://english.colorado.edu/queer-black-writers-cause-stir-in-american-…

Augmester English class: Literary exploration of stuff

What is an object and how does our perception of it impact our lives? In this Augmester course, The Modernist Object, Professor Jane Garrity brings students through a literary exploration of stuff. Contemporary “thing theory” and associated schools of thought have suggested that objects act and constitute human subjects in ways we have only begun to recognize. Azar Nafisi to give Best Should Teach Lecture Aug. 20

Azar Nafisi will speak on “The Republic of Imagination: Humanities & the Future of Democracies” during the Best Should Teach Lecture on Thursday, Aug. 20, 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Macky auditorium. Signed copies of her new book, The Republic of Imagination: America in Three Books—a hymn to the power of fiction to change lives will be available for purchase. This is a free, but ticketed event. Last summer workshops for kids at the Museum of Natural History

Come and learn how ancient animals from the very large to the very small left evidence of their lives. Our archaeology days will show your kids how humans have left their mark, and what we can learn about ancient cultures from the artifacts we find. From dinosaurs and insects to deep sea creatures, our topics are sure to engage your children and make an impression on their summer. Workshops run every Friday morning 9 a.m. to noon, through Aug. 7. The fee is $25 per workshop (10 percent discount for MuseumKids members and CU faculty/staff).
