Study Abroad: Entrepreneurship and empowerment in South Africa

Want to spend six weeks this summer in South Africa gaining hands-on experience as a consultant? Students form consulting teams with local South-African students to develop deliverables for emerging entrepreneurs in the townships surrounding Cape Town. Led by Erick Mueller and Dr. Mike Morris, students earn six upper-division credit hours for INBU 4925. Credit counts toward BUSN electives and fulfills the Global Experience requirement for GBC. Open to all majors. Interest meeting is scheduled for Nov. 1 at 5 p.m. in KOBL 350.

The success and the science of the student-built MinXSS Solar CubeSat

In this Nov. 2 talk, LASP research scientist James Mason will describe some of the early results from CU Boulder and LASP’s latest CubeSat project, MinXSS, which focuses on the energetic processes that occur in the sun’s atmosphere. He’ll reveal lessons learned from the student-led project and how the team will apply those lessons to MinXSS-2, scheduled to launch in the first half of 2017. 7:30 p.m., doors open at 7 p.m. LSTB building, room 299 1234 Innovation Drive, East Campus Research Park Admission is FREE!

Cheers for charity!

Join the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences for our annual Cheers for Charity event on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 6 to 8 p.m. The event will be held at FATE Brewery. There will be a silent auction, and all proceeds will go to Brain Buddies and the Speech Language & Hearing Clinic's Y.A.C.H.T. Club. Both programs help individuals with aphasia gain independence through social activities. The $5 entrance fee covers appetizers and a raffle ticket.

The University Libraries and the Open Science Interest Group are hosting several events to celebrate. Implementing Open Research Practices with the Open Science Framework Thursday, Oct. 27, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., at UMC 247 This workshop will explore the features of The Open Science Framework (OSF), a free and open-source tool that allows you to manage all the components of your research project.

Open Access: Open the world of data with web APIs

Oct. 24 through Oct. 30 is Open Access Week! This is an annual scholarly communication event focusing on open access and related topics. The University Libraries and the Open Science Interest Group are hosting several events to celebrate. Open the World of Data with Web APIs Wednesday, Oct. 26, noon to 1 p.m. Norlin Library E113 This workshop will cover how web APIs work, as well as how to use them to access data. There will also be a demonstration of easy to use tools to get started with APIs.
