CHINA Town Hall

Join us Oct. 29 at 5:30 pm in the 3rd floor Abram's Lounge in the C4C: "CHINA Town Hall,” a national day of China-related programming, is designed to provide Americans with an opportunity to discuss issues related to U.S.-China relations with leading experts in the field. This year's program will open with a webcast from Beijing featuring Gary Locke, U.S. ambassador to China, discussing U.S.-China relations, followed by a talk by a local speaker. $10 registration fee to be collected at the door (cash or check); FREE with student ID.

Japanese American Relations: A Personal Odyssey

A lecture by Mariko Terasaki Miller, first woman to be appointed an Honorary Consul-General of Japan. Ms. Miller will talk about her childhood experiences in China during the Sino/Japanese war, the role her father Hidenari Terasaki played in negotiations between Japan and the US prior to the outbreak of the Pacific War and the family’s internment by the Japanese authorities. Legal Pluralism in South Indian Fisheries: A Typology of Interplays

A lecture by Dr. Maarten Bavinck, Director of the Center for Maritime Research, University of Amsterdam. This talk will investigate the interactions that take place between various legal systems, especially along the Coromandel Coast, in the context of fishing. Recent Developments in Iranian Women's Writing

A lecture by Dr. Nasrin Rahimieh, Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of California, Irvine. Affective Labor, Ethnic Migrant Youth and the Precariat in Neoliberal China

A public lecture by Hai Ren, Assistant Professor of East Asian Studies at the University of Arizona. Prof. Ren will examine how ethnic minority migrant youth in China pursue work opportunities that involve the investment of affective labor. The lecture will take place on Oct. 4 at 5 pm in Humanities 135. This event is part of the Center for Asian Speaker Series.

Min'yo: Japan's musical roots

Join us Sept. 30 & Oct. 1 for: A concert of min’yo folk music and dance featuring Takeda Masahiro and Takeda Hiroko, award winning folk performers and professional min’yo musicians from Japan (Sept. 30) and a lecture demonstration by CU Prof. Jay Keister (Oct. 1). In the lecture Prof. Keister will analyze several key min’yo songs and examine the meanings and significance in their words and music. The 9/30 concert will begin at 7:30 pm. The 10/01 concert will begin at 2 pm. Both events will be in the Grusin Music Hall.

When the World Becomes Female: Possibilities of a South Indian Goddess

Introduction to Hands-Only CPR (Oct. 1; 4-5; 5-6; 6-7)

Someone collapses in front of you ­ what would you do? Hands-Only CPR can save a life and this 45-minute class will teach you how to perform this important skill. The class includes a CPR video and time to practice the skills on a CPR mannequin. While this class is not a full certification opportunity, it provides a skill that has been proven effective in saving lives by the American Heart Association.
