16th Annual Thompson Awards for Western American Writing

Each year, Center of the American West awards $500 cash prizes to talented students writing on Western topics. All CU-Boulder degree program students are eligible. Categories are poetry, fiction, memoir, creative non-fiction and academic non-fiction. The deadline is March 22, and we are accepting entries now. You could take advantage of a class assignment to write something that would be perfect for the contest. SIT Study Abroad meet and greet

Are you interested in an SIT Study Abroad program? Through the School for International Training (SIT), CU students have studied throughout Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. Please join recent SIT alumni for a light lunch on March 4th from 1-3 p.m. in the Aspen Room, UMC. Come learn more about their experiences and ask any questions you may have about SIT programs. 'The Grenada Revolution, The US Invasion and the Public Humanities'

Thurs. 2/26, 5 p.m., in Norlin M549, the Departments of English and French and Italian are hosting the 1st in a series of 3 lectures on Caribbean Studies. Shalini Puri will give a talk entitled "Lives and Afterlives: The Grenada Revolution, the US Invasion and the Public Humanities". Puri is an associate professor of English, University of Pittsburgh. She works on postcolonial theory and cultural studies in the Caribbean. Her book on Grenada is the first scholarly book to look at conflicting memories of the revolution and U.S. intervention.

First Annual Doug Burger Lecture in Medieval and Early Modern Literature honors Doug Burger

On Tuesday, March 10, the English Department is kicking off the First Annual Doug Burger Lecture in Medieval and Early Modern Literature to honor Doug Burger, a much-loved professor. Reception at 4 pm in the British Studies Room (Norlin M549), followed by a talk at 5 pm by David Aers of Duke University. Aers’s talk will explore one of the grand narratives of modernity —­ the Reformation — tracing the concerns about the church that William Langland raises in his late-fourteenth-century poem Piers Plowman forward to the work of John Milton.

Better Boulder Better World

Better Boulder Better World is one of the Volunteer Resource Center's largest annual service days, and is great opportunity to connect with your fellow CU peers, as well as make an impact in the larger Boulder community. There will be a variety of project sites that work with different issues including, environmental preservation, food justice, poverty recovery and more. AREND fights poaching of rhinos for horns used in Chinese Medicine

Wildlife conservation needs support to protect rhinos, elephants and other endangered species from cruel poaching. Rhino horns are used in Chinese medicine, and China has a major industry in carving of ivory. AREND is a sensor aircraft for aerial surveillance specialized for detecting people and large animals, among other things. Jean Koster and her team of students are developing this technology to help fight rhino hunting in Africa. CAS Luncheon Series. Lunch will be provided.
