Paid survey on CU first-year experiences, mental health

Did you know one out of five college students experiences significant emotional difficulties? 

The EMERGE (Examining Milestones in Emotion, Regulation, Growth & Education) study seeks to understand your experience as a first-year student at CU. Earn $20 by completing an online survey sharing your own experiences, thoughts and feelings. To qualify, you must be a first-year CU college student, between the ages of 18-25 and fluent in English.

This research is being conducted by researchers in the CU Department of Psychology and Neuroscience (IRB #18-0483) and is conducted as part of a partnership with the Office of Undergraduate Education, the University Exploration and Advising Center, the Center for STEM Learning and the Office of Data Analytics.

Run the Nearly Naked Mile for a good cause Friday night

Join The Herd for a CU campus traditions: the Nearly Naked Mile. You'll run through campus in your underwear after donating your clothes to a good cause! Donate five or more articles of clothing and receive a free commemorative Herd fanny pack! The Nearly Naked Mile benefits A Precious Child, a local nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged and displaced children, and Denver Rescue Mission, a metro-Denver based non-profit dedicated to transforming the lives of people suffering in poverty or homelessness. Come enjoy the pre-run entertainment (DJ, snacks, games and prizes) starting at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at the Koenig Alumni Center. The race starts at Koenig at 9 p.m.

Deadline extended for Academic Futures responses, diversity report posting

The deadline for submitting a response to the Academic Futures report has been extended to the end of business on Friday, Sept. 28. Response papers are particularly designed for groups or units on campus wishing to address a single project or area of recommendations presented by the Committee. Response papers should be no more than two pages in length.

Also, as announced Sept. 17, Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Community Engagement Bob Boswell granted an extension to the Diversity, Inclusion and Academic Excellence Plan Revising Committee at the Committee’s request. A new fall semester date for the posting of the plan will be announced soon.

Make a difference through fraternity life at CU Boulder

CU Boulder Fraternity & Sorority Life would like to introduce you to the newly recognized fraternity community at CU Boulder! Fraternity life is changing nationwide, and recognized chapters will be able to be a part of an innovative movement to shape what fraternity means to CU Boulder. 

Over the course of the next few weeks, our new fraternities will be holding rush events to recruit men who truly want to make a difference at CU Boulder. Because our chapters are new to campus, students who choose to join the recognized chapters will have the ability to shape their chapter culture and influence the development of a soon-to-be CU Interfraternity Council.

This is a great leadership opportunity for new and returning CU students! You must be able to attend the board meetings from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays.

For parents: Cognitive Development Center offers fun research projects for kids

The Cognitive Development Center in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience is looking for children ages birth to 12 years old who are interested in playing games that will help teach us about self-control, language, and cognitive strategies. 

A visit, scheduled at your convenience, lasts about 60 minutes. Babysitting is available for siblings. Parents are compensated for travel, and kids receive a fun prize.

Human Resources closing at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21

OIT to pilot new Canvas design tool

Are you interested in customizing the look and feel of your Canvas course? If so, you might be a great fit to join OIT’s Cidi Labs Design Tools pilot. 

To be a participant, we recommend you have used Canvas for at least one semester prior to spring 2019, that you have time to learn a new tool and provide feedback via surveys and/or in person, and that you plan to use Canvas to teach in spring 2019. Email by Sept. 24 if you're interested.

Announcing new online course proposal, revision forms

Just in time for fall 2019 course planning, the Office of the Registrar’s Academic Scheduling team is excited to announce the recent launch of our new online course proposal and course revision forms. The new forms replace the paper forms (expiring after Sept. 30) and make the entire process more efficient, transparent and collaborative by:

  • Allowing the submitter to upload comments and supporting documentation for the approvers
  • Checking for errors as the submitter completes the form, helping to keep typos from derailing the submission
  • Identifying every catalog page on which the course appears, alerting the submitter to potential down-stream effects (key departments receive an FYI notification when course changes are submitted)
  • Sending reviewers and approvers automated reminders to keep the process moving
  • Allowing the submitter to track the form’s status as it moves through the review and approval process

The online course proposal and revision forms are pretty intuitive and have many of the same fields and request similar data as the previous paper forms. If you have any questions, please email academicscheduling@colorado.edu.

Paid study to interact with augmented reality headset

This study will evaluate the effectiveness of remotely operated telepresence human avatars for long-distance video conferencing presented in augmented reality. The study will take approximately 45 minutes, and you will be compensated $10.

To qualify, you must be between the ages of 18 and 45 years old.
