Cultured Warriors: The Enduring Legacy of the Samurai in Japanese Society

Dr. Robert Pontsioen will outline the history and significance of samurai culture, from the rise of the samurai in 12th-century feudal Japan and their many centuries of military governance, to the arrival of Commodore Perry's "black ships" from America and the end of the samurai class. This lecture, which will be followed by a dance performance from the CU Japanese ensemble, celebrates the opening of the newest exhibit in the CU Museum of Natural History’s Anthropology Hall.
