Worried about your retirement investments and the stock market? Catch the December TIAA webinar

Most of us have at least a basic understanding of the stock market—up is good and down is bad. Watching the day-to-day variations of stock prices can easily cause our mood to shift as quickly as the market. But investments are a long game, and TIAA can help retirement plan enrollees address their concerns by better understanding market volatility and normal variations in the market.

Faculty and staff enrolled in one of CU’s TIAA-administered plans are invited to join Gregg Marsh, TIAA’s director of integrated solutions, for the webinar Market Volatility at noon MST Dec. 16. This webinar will focus on market volatility, what it is, and how it plays into your future goals. Your host will also discuss strategies to help you weather the ups and downs of the stock market.

Instructors: Reminder submit spring book, course material information today

Instructors have received ongoing email communications requesting book and course materials information for spring 2022 courses. As a reminder, campus policy states that departments are required to identify what books and other course materials are required (or if a course will have no required materials) for their classes by the day of registration.

Course material information is critical to provide financial transparency to our students during course registration and to help them plan ahead. It is also needed in order for the university to maintain Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEA) and Americans with Disability Act (ADA) compliance (Disability Services needs sufficient lead time to gain access to and prepare books and materials in suitable alternative formats for students who need them).

Instructors who are not requiring specific books or course materials for a course (and departments with unassigned courses that won’t have required materials) or courses that will utilize open education resources (OER) still need to notify the CU Book Store of that fact as soon as possible.

The book store has designated a staff member to facilitate any faculty needs around this. His name is Ryan Windle, and his contact information is:

  • ryan.windle@colorado.edu
  • 303-492-3421

Thank you for your prompt attention to this faculty responsibility.

Virtual workshop for children, teens: Shakespeare & Violence Prevention

Actors on stage

The Colorado Shakespeare Festival invites students (grades 3–12) to participate in the Shakespeare & Violence Prevention Program in a virtual setting on Dec. 14–15.

The Colorado Shakespeare Festival’s Shakespeare & Violence Prevention program is a partnership with the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence. Based on the latest violence prevention research, we’ve paired two of Shakespeare’s plays with a curriculum based in SEL and conflict management.

Typically available only for school groups, CSF is offering two age-specific workshops for interested students. Participants will view a film of an abridged performance, then participate in a 50-minute virtual workshop with the actors. They will explore the patterns of violence in the play, and roleplay their own solutions, practicing ways to move from a “bystander” role to an “upstander.”

Workshop details

Tuesday, Dec. 14, 4–5 p.m.
Grades 3–5 (prior to the workshop, we will share a link to view a 35-minute film of Twelfth Night)

Associate vice chancellor-chief of staff position opens to internal candidates

The university is accepting applications for an associate vice chancellor and chief of staff, who will support Chief Operating Officer Patrick O’Rourke and the members of the Strategic Resources and Support division.

O’Rourke oversees SRS, which encompasses CU Boulder’s business, communications, enrollment management, facilities management, finance, human resources, public safety and information technology priorities. The division works to enhance and support the university’s academic and research missions in partnership with the chancellor and the provost.

The individual selected for this key senior leadership role on campus will succeed Abby Benson, who previously held the position and recently served as deputy chief operating officer. Benson is stepping down to accept a senior advisory role at the University of Rhode Island.

Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply for the associate vice chancellor and chief of staff position and can find more details about this unique opportunity by visiting the internal job board

  1. Log in to the MyCUinfo portal.

The deadline for submitting an application is Dec. 3, and applicants should include a cover letter that specifically outlines how their experience and background aligns with the requirements, qualifications and responsibilities of this leadership position.

The new AVC and chief of staff to the COO will provide support and guidance on efforts that span across the SRS division and the campus. Successful candidates will possess high-level leadership skills, the ability to provide strategic insights and a proven track record for implementing organizational initiatives, O’Rourke said.

“The AVC and chief of staff serves a crucial role in our organization. As the SRS team works with our partners across the campus, the chief of staff helps to ensure that we are serving the campus community well,” O’Rourke said. “I’ve relied upon the person serving in this role to help us advance important campus initiatives and look forward to hiring someone who can help us move forward in accomplishing Chancellor DiStefano’s objectives.”

As currently envisioned, the role exercises formal oversight over the CU Boulder Office of Government and Community Engagement and the transformation team. However, these roles may be reassigned depending upon the successful candidate’s skills and interests.
