Grants for faculty, grad students in social sciences: Apply by Nov. 12

This fall semester, CARTSS (Center to Advance Research and Teaching in the Social Sciences) is offering two grant programs open to tenure-track faculty and graduate students conducting interdisciplinary research in the social sciences.

Deadline: Monday, Nov. 12

Faculty award

Our program is a competitive grant program to support tenure-track faculty conducting research in social science. We are particularly interested in projects that are new and innovative and expand or diverge from current research. Awards up to $4,000.

Graduate student award

This program provides a small amount of startup funds for graduate students conducting research in social science. We are particularly interested in supporting pilot projects designed to increase the chances of securing external funding support as well as field research, data acquisition, travel and other research cost essential to successful completion of research required for MA or PhD degrees. Awards up to $1,000.

Safe Zone LGBTQ+ Inclusivity Training: November workshop

The Center for Inclusion and Social Change offers monthly LGBTQ+ Inclusion Safe Zone Trainings throughout the academic year led by CISC staff and the peer education team. 

This interactive 90-minute training provides information about campus climate for the LGBT+ and allied community; surveys CU Boulder and Colorado resources, policies and protections; and addresses best practices for creating inclusive learning and work environments at the university. All are welcome, and requests can also be made for departmental or group-specific trainings.

The November workshop is set for 12:30–2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, in C4C S484.

Students are not required to register but may RSVP to one of the monthly trainings through Skillsoft within the campus portal. Once you log in using your Identikey, follow these steps:

Click on the Skillsoft tile. Select Library at the top of the page. Select your campus folder. Select a topic from Categories. Select a course and click “Launch.”

Employees can register through Skillsoft in the employee portal. Search under "LGBTQ" to find it. If you are having trouble logging in to Skillsoft, you can call Organizational and Employee Development at 303-492-8103.

Graphic design charity work: Backpacks for children

Looking for logo and graphic design work for our charity project. Logo needs to be simple and will be used for website, emails, T-shirts and stickers for boxes and backpacks. We send packed backpacks of supplies to children's organizations. We started this summer, and now we need a logo and simple website. Currently sending backpacks to an organization in NYC that helps at-risk children. Your work will make a difference for these kids! Thanks for considering.

Spring internships for juniors, seniors at History Colorado Center

The Center of the American West internships program is now accepting applications for spring 2019 internships at History Colorado Center. Current openings include a research assistant position in the Exhibits Department and a School Programs position. These 3-credit hour internships require registration for the Center of the American West internships course CAMW3939 and will require 8 to 10 on-the-job work hours per week at your internship, plus some academic assignments. UROP seeking faculty to host 'interest tables' at symposium

UROP Symposium interest tables
The UROP Symposium provides an opportunity for students from historically underrepresented and underserved communities to meet faculty and learn how to get started on research, scholarly and creative projects. In this lively, fast-paced event, students visit several "interest tables" to meet faculty members and hear about research, scholarly and creative work in a fun, informal environment with plenty of food and drinks. Faculty are encouraged to sign up online to host an interest table. The deadline to register is Friday, Nov. 9.

Global Sustainability Scholars accepting applications until Nov. 15

Global Sustainability Scholars (GSS) program is a paid, three-summer international research experience for undergraduates committed to solving sustainability issues.

GSS brings the brightest undergraduate students from underrepresented groups to work across cultures, borders and disciplines. It provides an opportunity for you to get paid and engage in cutting-edge international research programs in urban sustainable food, energy and water nexus.

For parents: Cognitive Development Center offers fun research projects for kids

The Cognitive Development Center in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience is looking for children ages birth to 12 years old who are interested in playing games that will help teach us about self-control, language and cognitive strategies. 

A visit, scheduled at your convenience, lasts about 60 minutes. Babysitting is available for siblings. Parents are compensated for travel, and kids receive a fun prize.

City to present proposed bike, pedestrian improvements

People participate in Bike To Work Day in Boulder

The city of Boulder is hosting an on-campus open house on Monday, Oct. 29, to present proposed bike and pedestrian improvements to three busy intersections, Colorado Avenue and Regent Drive, 29th Street and Baseline Road, and 30th Street and Colorado Avenue. This will include updates on a planned underpass at 30th and Colorado.

The open house is from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sustainability, Energy and Environment Community (SEEC) building on East Campus.

Paid study on understanding the emotions of others

Interested in your moods and brain? Participate in a paid neuroimaging study to understand your own emotions and the emotions of others on the CU Boulder campus in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience (IRB# 17-0358).

Earn $15–$25 per hour to participate in studies involving answering questions about your thoughts and feelings, watching brief videos, playing computer games and having an MRI brain scan taken. Study includes up to three separate visits (first is 4–5 hours, second is 3 hours, third is 1–2 hours). Option for additional paid follow-ups.

To qualify, you must be between the ages of 18 and 55 years old and either have:

  • A diagnosis of bipolar disorder
  • A history of depression
  • No history of mental health conditions

Last call: Enter the International Education Week photo contest

In honor of International Education Week, Nov. 12–16, Education Abroad and International Student & Scholar Services is announcing a photo contest open to current study abroad students, recent study abroad returnees and current international students and scholars.

Eligible students/scholars are welcome to submit up to three photos for a chance to win a prize. Entrants are encouraged to submit photos that reflect IEW’s mission of promoting international and intercultural understanding.

The deadline to submit photos is 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21. Please read the rules and eligibility requirements carefully before submitting.

Three winners will be selected from Education Abroad submissions, and three winners will be selected from International Student & Scholar submissions. Winners will be honored at an IEW Coffee Hour on Friday, Nov. 9.
