The Boulder Office of Disaster Management will begin audible outdoor emergency warning siren testing on Monday, April 7, at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. 

Tests are conducted on the first Monday of each month from April through August, when regional flooding can occur. Planned tests may be canceled during severe weather events or other emergencies.

Siren tests ensure that all systems and procedures are working properly during peak flood season and are meant to be audible outdoors throughout Boulder County. 

Warning sirens provide those who are outdoors and in high-risk areas with audible alerts for flash flood warnings, tornado warnings, or upon request from first responders for imminent life threats. 

In emergencies, the sirens will broadcast a voice message immediately following the siren signal to inform the public of the situation and what actions should be taken. 

CU Boulder community members may hear the siren tests from many outdoor locations on Main Campus as well as East Campus, Research Park and South Campus. The audible sirens are designed to reach people who are outdoors, not indoors. 

The tests are a good reminder to all students, faculty and staff to ensure they’re signed up for alerts for both on-campus and off-campus emergencies. Information on CU Boulder Alerts can be found here, including user sign-up and how to find confirmed, accurate information in an emergency. 

Anyone with an @colorado.edu email address is automatically registered to receive CU Boulder’s emergency and safety alert emails. To improve your situational awareness, it is also recommended that you opt in with a mobile number during class registration or onboarding as a new employee.

The Boulder Office of Disaster Management distributes emergency alerts for significant incidents, including natural disasters, via a system called Everbridge. Campus community members with Boulder addresses are automatically opted in to the Everbridge system. 

Those who live outside of Boulder but want to be aware of emergency notifications in the area must sign up for BoCo Alerts.
